What business really thinks about Brexit

A week ago I sent a ‘One-Click’ question to well over 1000 business people that I have got to know over the last 20 years, asking: “Should Great Britain leave the European Union?” I did it to demonstrate how effective one carefully placed question can be in investigating crucial issues. Here is the output:

I was initially shocked at the strength of the Remain response, when the national polls are at only 51% for Remain and 49% for Leave. The reason for the difference probably lies in the mix of people asked. Business people often worry about how their businesses will succeed, and are concerned that an exit could hurt them, whilst the person in the street tends to worry about their job, for example through the impact of immigration.

Here are the reasons given by business people for their views:

Why Remain?

1. Our economy will be better/ more stable

2. We will be better able to to tackle the world’s problems

3. Leaving would bring a lot of uncertainty and risk

Why Leave?

1. To escape from EU bureaucracy and costs

2. Europe is undemocratic

3. Immigration is a threat
